Abstract

Pore-scale modelling is an important new tool which can supplement special core analysis measurements by providing two phase and multiphase flow functions for a range of rock and pore types. In the present work, a new computational method that is a modified capillary bundle model estimates the permeability of porous media. Initially, the micro-CT imaging is used to obtain 3D image of sand packed bed. From the image, the topological and geometrical properties of the pore space of those packed bed is obtained by analyzing the extracted pore network model. Then a random walker method is applied to calculate the three-dimensional pore tortuosity. Finally, a capillary bundle model is modified using parameters of pore space obtained from the aforementioned two steps. Absolute permeability of the sand packed beds are calculated using the improved method presented compare using the semi-empirical Kozeny–Carman (KC) equation and other previously proposed methods in this paper. The numerical results agree better with the experimental data than other methods which indicates that our modified method succeeded in raising the accuracy of existing models.
