Abstract

Experimental investigation on heat transfer by natural and mixed convection from heated vertical rectangular fin arrays is presented. The parameters of study are fin spacing, temperature difference between the fin surface and ambient air, fin height and Richardson number. Experimental results are validated with the available data on natural convection and with the mixed convection data for vertical plate. Results are generated in the form of variation in average heat transfer coefficient (ha), base heat transfer coefficient (hb), average Nusselt number (Nua) and base Nusselt number (Nub). At low Richardson numbers, heat transfer coefficient values are higher than in natural convection, as it is forced convection dominant region. At higher Richardson numbers, it becomes natural convection predominant mode. Dimensionless optimum spacing is found for a range of Richardson numbers, Rayleigh numbers and geometric parameters. Experimental data is correlated in the dimensionless form. Variations in Nub and Nua are studied with the other relevant governing parameters of the mixed convection i.e. Ri, Gr and with a range of geometric parameters S/H and H/L.
