A Miniature Multiple Vibrating-Fan Cooling System Using Magnetic Force and Piezoelectric Force

Abstract

In the previous multiple piezoelectric (PZT) fan systems, Several PZT plates are required for the systems as power sources. Thus, the power consumption and the cost are both increased due to several PZT plates. In this study, an innovative miniature multiple vibrating-fan cooling system using magnetic force and PZT force has been proposed. The system consists of three vibrating-fans flapping back and forth like handheld fans. It requires only one PZT plate so its power consumption and cost are very low. It takes advantage of the magnetic force, the PZT force and the resonance effect to operate at a high performance. The geometries of the system is 60 mm (L) * 45 mm (W) * 15 mm (H) so it is small enough to be placed in laptops, thin clients and LED desk lamps. For a LED desk lamp experiment, the system was applied in a 8.11W LED desk lamp. The experimental results showed that the temperature of the heat sink base can be cooled from 86.6°C to 56.8°C in 300 seconds while the room temperature was 30.1°C and the power consumption of the system was only 0.08 W. For a thin client experimental, the core temperature of CPU which was consuming 18W, can be maintained at 50°C while the environmental temperature was 25.6°C. Thus, the miniature multiple-vibrating-fan cooling system showed effective thermal dissipation as well as low power consumption in real applications.
