Abstract

This paper is to present an overview of the AMS thermal control system and its environment in space on the ISS, and give examples of analysis and correlation of space environmental and ISS parameters with the thermal behavior of the various AMS components. It is found that the most effective factors which affect the thermal environment to AMS are solar beta angle, attitude of ISS, solar array positions and ISS radiator positions. The design with a special sandwich structure with embedded heat pipes gives the radiator higher heat transfer ability for and power crates as well as a large heat retaining capacity to balance the frequent changes of the space environment temperatures. In cold cases, the thermostatically controlled heaters are working actively to protect AMS survive. However, sometimes, because of ISS special operations plus extreme solar beta angle, AMS need to request to NASA take ISS adjustment to make thermal control. The three years' operation verifies the reliability and stability of the thermal control system of AMS. All the detectors operate normally, the and crates work within their specific temperature limits.
