Abstract

Unsteady conjugate heat transfer, which is a coupling phenomenon of heat transfer between a fluid and a solid, causes two problems from the viewpoint of the thermal design of devices. The first is the erroneous prediction of the total amount of heat transfer across the wall due to the nonlinear time dependence. The second is the possibility of generating high-cycle thermal fatigue in materials. In order to more easily predict the conjugate effect for a turbulent flow, we attempted to model the temporal fluctuation of the heat transfer experimentally. That is, the modeling was performed to fit the statistics of the experimental data by a method that uses log-normal random numbers and low-pass filtering. The proposed procedure requires only four parameters: the characteristic fluctuating frequency, the index of the low-pass filtering, and the mean and the rms value of the heat transfer coefficient. This modeling appears to be appropriate for generating realistic fluctuations of the heat transfer caused by flow turbulence. Moreover, the generated fluctuating heat transfer coefficient can be used to simulate the conjugate effect, although several areas for future research remain.
