Abstract

Reasonable organization of the secondary flow can greatly increase the heat transfer capacity only with a moderate pressure drop penalty. Vortex generators are the ideal producers and adjusters for secondary flow. Generally, VGs are punched out form the wall surface in practical applications, however, this manner is difficult to implement on the tube inner wall. With this consideration, a novel type of tube inserts of twisted quadrilateral winglet vortex generators (QWVGs) was proposed. The influence of various design parameters on the heat transfer and flow friction characteristics of a circular tube fitted with twisted QWVGs inserts was analyzed by numerical method under the two typical thermal boundary conditions, namely uniform wall temperature (UWT) and uniform wall heat flux (UWHF), and the parameters of twisted QWVGs were optimized by Taguchi method. The results indicated that for the studied structure parameters, the dominant parameters influencing on heat transfer performance are closely dependent on Re and the thermal boundary conditions. When Re = 400, the dominant parameters are the axial spacing of QWVG pairs, the attack angle of QWVG pairs, and the base tape width. And when Re = 200, the second shape angle of QWVGs becomes one of the dominant parameters instead of the base tape width. The parallelogram VG is superior to the right- angle trapezium VG, and the cases of the ratio of base tape width to tube diameter, Wb/D = 0.3 have an advantage over those of Wb/D = 0.5, especially under UWT condition.
