A STUDY ON NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF ROLLOVER PHENOMENON IN TWO-LAYER DENSITY STRATIFIED FLUID

Abstract

The demand of LNG is extending in recent years and requirement to store LNG with different density in the same tank is increasing. In that situation double-diffusive convection and phenomenon called as "Rollover" will occur in LNG tank by the heat input and LNG tank will be damaged by large amount of BOG (Boil off Gas). We must consider the rollover phenomenon when we design LNG tank and plant system. The purpose of this study is to establish analytical technology which can predict rollover. We calculated double-diffusive convection in the two dimensional numerical analysis and evaluated the numerical analytical results concerning the density and the temperature field by comparison to subscale tank experiment. We prepared two types of tank with polycarbonate and copper as bottom wall material. We visualized density field by shadowgraph and measured temperature field by thermocouples. We analyzed in the same condition as the experiment except for the phase change. In temperature field, analytical and experimental results agree quantitatively in the case of polycarbonate bottom wall. However, in the density field, there were some qualitative discrepancies. In lower layer, the "finger" was observed in experimental result and it was not observed in analytical results. It is caused by the mixing layer which was generated during filling process of test liquid. We could establish calculation technology for double-diffusive convection as the first step of rollover calculation.
