Abstract

SOEC (Solid oxide electrolysis cell) has the potential to directly convert H2O/CO2 into CH4 in a single reactor for the application of renewable power-to-methane storage technology. In this study, a two-dimension mutli-scale electro-thermo tubular LSGM-based SOEC model was developed to couple heat transfer, mass transfer, charge transfer as well as electro- and thermo- chemistry. The temperature mismatch existing between the H2O/CO2 co-electrolysis and methanation reaction can be well alleviated by feeding the cool inlet gas stream with 490°C in the counter flow mode. This heat-flow design can improve the CO2-to-CH4 conversion ratio from 25.7% to 99.7%.
