Abstract

The growth of spherical air bubbles in water was simulated using a new type of 3D front tracking method, the InterSection Marker (ISM) method. Coupled with an in-house variable-density and variable-viscosity single-fluid flow solver, the ISM interface tracking method was employed to simulate the air bubble growth while rising in quiescent water under the influence of the buoyancy and the surface tension forces. The source terms were modelled in the CFD governing equations to account for the added mass into the air bubble. The bubble properties such as size, shape, velocity and rise distance were predicted for various test conditions by means of changing the mass transfer flux rates, initial bubble sizes and gravitational fields. The obtained results from the ISM method thoroughly validated against the previously published experimental and analytical results and found to be in very close agreement.
