An analytical, approximate emittance expression is developed for semitransparent solids. This model is based upon an approximate model for the refractive index and spectral absorption coefficient of a single absorption band. The resulting expression depends upon two parameters; α which depends upon the band center wavenumber and sample temperature, and β which depends upon the band properties and sample thickness. Experimental measurements of the total normal emittance of fused quartz are used to develop expressions for the apparent α and β. The α parameter is found to be inversely proportional to the sample temperature and β is found to be proportional to the sample thickness to the 0.36 power.
