Abstrakt

In the present review a survey is given concerning a series of investigations which relate to the heat and mass transfer at rivers.
First of all they concern theoretical work as well as experimental research in the laboratory. Furthermore reference is made to numerous wind functions by means of which the mass transfer can be calculated. The equilibrium temperature is a practically important quantity which is, however, defined in different ways. In the case of the exponential cooling law it has the function of a reference quantity. The transfer coefficient, which appears in this exponential cooling law, can be calculated as a function of the water temperature and of the wind velocity. Several methods will be described in detail which have been developed for measuring of heat and mass transfer coefficients as well as the net radiation at the river interface. Finally some methods will be discussed which enable the calculation of the heat loss of rivers.
