Pool boiling critical heat fluxes in water and in sodium under saturated and subcooled conditions were experimentally studied at subatmospheric pressures. Conventional theoretical equations cannot at all predict the saturated and subcooled critical heat fluxes in sodium for the pressures here tested and those in water for the pressures lower than 30 kPa. Empirical equation of saturated and subcooled critical heat fluxes was given as a function of system pressure, liquid head and liquid temperature. A theoretical model which can describe the critical heat flux in water and in sodium under saturated and subcooled conditions was presented.
