Abstrakt

The heat exchanger design problem is intricate because it involves many variables for geometry and operating conditions, also heat exchangers are designed for a variety of applications having different objectives. A review is made of various methods used in the literature for heat exchanger optimization. Numerical nonlinear programming techniques are most suited for this problem. These techniques are described in the paper. A package approach which includes several optimization methods and the heat exchanger performance analysis routine is recommended for heat exchanger optimization. The methodology for heat exchanger optimization is outlined and a sample problem is presented to show the type of results that can be achieved from an optimization study.
