Abstrakt

This paper studies the nature of the heat transfer characteristics of porous media, in particular the relative effects of conduction and forced convection. Experiments are performed on three different water saturated porous materials, two foam metals, and Tegraglas. One dimensional steady state temperature profiles are measured for the cases in which the direction of the mass flow and the imposed temperature gradient are either the same or the opposite. The experimental temperature profiles agreed to within 20% with those calculated from one of the authors' proposed analytical model. Also, the effective thermal conductivities with stagnant fluid were measured and found not to change (within 20%) over the mass flow rates studied.
