Heat conduction optimization: high conductivity constructs based on the principle of biological evolution

Abstrakt

A fundamental problem of heat conduction optimization, the design of the most effective heat transport path using a given volume of high conductivity material, was studied in this paper. Natural selection was used to construct the optimal constructs of the high conductivity material. In the numerical simulation, the high conductivity material was treated as being alive which obeys the evolutionary principle that the high conductivity material grows at the location with maximum temperature gradient. Twodimensional heat conduction in a square bar was optimized by inserting high conductivity material into 10% of the volume. The optimal construct of the high conductivity material is similar to the real life constructs and the heat transfer rate for a given temperature difference is about 25% higher than that of conventional optimized layouts.
