Abstrakt

Consideration is given to plane, arbitrarily-shaped symmetrical bodies immersed in a uniform gas stream and aligned so that the symmetry axis and the stream direction are coincident. The analysis is carried out for the physically-realistic boundary conditions of circumferentially-uniform surface mass transfer and of local equilibrium between the convective heat transfer and the enthalpy rise of the coolant gas. The general solution is specialized to the case of the circular cylinder in crossflow, a situation for which experimental heat transfer data are available. Analytical results for the circumferential distributions of the heat transfer coefficient and the surface temperature are presented. The former are compared with experiment and good agreement is found to exist.
