Abstrakt

A heat exchanger with one shell pass and an odd number of tube passes possesses a possible installation advantage of having the tube side fluid inlet and outlet at opposite ends of the exchanger. In order to exploit this advantage, effectiveness values as a function of capacity rate ratio, R, and number of transfer units, Ntu, are needed for computations pertaining to the design and performance of such an exchanger. This paper addresses the development of the effectiveness data and presents effectiveness values to the requisite precision as polynomial approximations in the range 0.25 ≤ Ntu ≤ 3.25. These approximations are based on numerical data and the paper provides the approximations for both the 1-3 and 1-5 exchangers (one shell pass and three and five tube passes). It is shown that the 1-3 exchanger with two counterflow passes out-performs the 1-2 exchanger and that the 1-5 exchanger with three counterflow passes out-performs the 1-4 exchanger.
