Abstrakt

This investigation is devoted to the examination of the physical mechanisms of grain refinement in aeronautic aluminum alloys by application of an induction electromagnetic field. Two representative situations of solidification corresponding to a widespread industrial production of ingots, cast either in mold, or continuously, were studied. The metallurgical findings (crystal growth) were connected with the heat and fluid flow measurements. It is shown that the effect of a vigorous forced convection (electromagnetic stirring) results in a decided refinement both of the columnar crystal and of the equiaxed grain.
