Abstrakt

In external flow boiling on horizontal tube banks, bubbles from lower tubes impinge on upper tubes. In the present experiments a tube was simulated by a sloping plate, electrically heated, with its lower surface immersed in water subcooled by 3K−4K and its upper surface coated with thermochromic liquid crystal. Steam bubbles were injected below the plate. The motion of bubbles sliding along the plate and the accompanying variations in wall temperature were recorded simultaneously by a high speed colour video camera.
Preliminary results are given with comments on the enhancement of heat transfer by sliding bubbles and an account of some of the difficulties of applying liquid crystal thermography to boiling research.
