Abstrakt

Detailed measurements on the flow boiling of hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon mixtures are scarce and very expensive to acquire. A high pressure hydrocarbon boiling loop has been built and is operating at Harwell. The fluid can be circulated at pressures up to 40 bar and flow rates up to 500 kg/m2 s through a 25 mm bore, 8.5 m long, electrically heated, vertical test section. Single phase heat transfer, subcooled boiling and saturated boiling up to dryout can all be observed simultaneously in the test section under certain conditions.
A systematic programme of experiments on the boiling of binary and ternary mixtures has been funded by the Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow Service (HTFS). Data on the boiling of pentane, iso-octane and two pentane / iso-octane mixtures are reported herein. The boiling heat transfer coefficients of the mixtures are significantly lower than those of either single component at similar conditions. Comparisons with published boiling correlations are presented. Observations of significantly improved heat transfer just prior to dryout are also reported. Analysis of the data is continuing with the aim of producing improved prediction methods for the boiling of multi-component mixtures.
