Abstrakt

This paper presents results of experiments concerning flow phenomena of a liquid film falling on a vertical row of horizontal smooth tubes. Isopropyl alcohol and distilled water served as test liquids. Tube spacing, flow rate and temperature of the liquid were varied systematically. Depending on these parameters, three main flow patterns were observed, namely, droplet, column, and liquid sheet. Based on visual observations, flow charts were developed showing the parameter ranges for each flow pattern. It could be shown that the film Reynolds number at the boundaries of different flow patterns mainly depends on the Kapica number. In the region of column mode, in-line as well as staggered arrangement of leaving columns regarding oncoming ones is possible. In contrast to the staggered arrangement, the in-line one is rarely reported in literature.
The column spacing were measured for both liquids. They were found to agree satisfactorily with values calculated by a Taylor instability based method.
