EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF THE THERMAL PERFORMANCE OF MATRIX PLATE FIN HEAT SINK WITH MULTIPLE PHASE CHANGE MATERIALS

Abstrakt

The aim of this study is to experimentally investigate the heat transfer performance of a matrix plate fin heat sink with multiple PCMs. The heat sink is made of aluminium. The heat sink wall and back side of the heater are insulated by means of rubberized cork to avoid heat loss to the ambient. The PCMs employed in the study are n-eicosane(C20H42), docosane(C22H46) and tetracosane(C24H50). The three PCMs show considerable diversity in their properties, predominantly in their melting points and latent heats. For the purpose of benchmarking the performance of the heat sinks with PCMs, experiments are also conducted with air as the working medium. The motivation behind this study is to exploit the high latent heat of the PCMs employed as well as their different melting points, with the main goal being the maintenance of the device temperature within safe operating limits. The design of experiments is carried out by using the state of the art Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) technique to generate initial configurations of multiple PCM arrangements within the heat sink. The total cost range of the PCM and the heat flux remain constant with any given arrangement. The heat sink performance is defined in terms of the time to reach a predefined setpoint temperature and the time to solidify so that the PCM is ready for the next cycle of operation.
