Sinopsis

A two-dimensional transient finite difference model has been applied to simulate the heat transfer processes in a vertically stratified estuary under natural conditions and during the operation of a power plant that withdraws cooling water near the bottom of the estuary and discharges it at the surface. The model had been calibrated with velocity, salinity and temperature measurements from a four-week period during fall when unsteady hydro-logical and meteorological conditions prevailed. It had then been verified with data from a summer period with rather steady ambient conditions. Good agreement of predictions with measured data could be achieved for both periods. Vertical spreading of discharged cooling water (on which the possibility of recirculation depends) was found to be governed by density and by dynamic effects. It is enhanced during ebb tide, when vertical velocities are directed downward, and during colder seasons, when the density effect of the higher salinity of cooling water withdrawn near the bottom is not compensated by the temperature increase in the condensor.
