Sinopsis

In the conventional two-phase thermosiphon the condensate returns from the condenser to the boiler under the action of gravitational forces; the condenser must be above the evaporator. In the inverse thermosiphon, or anti-gravity thermosiphon as it has been sometimes called, the condenser may be below the device, heat being transferred downwards as in a heat pipe acting against gravity. After describing these devices in geometric terms, the procedures for use in the thermal-hydraulic design of condenser-operated inverse thermosiphons are developed. The use of these procedures in the design of devices containing water as the working fluid is then illustrated, and charts for use in estimating performance developed.
