Sinopsis

The measured temperature and velocity profiles in downward-flowing turbulent air in a heated section of a vertical 8-in. pipe are compared with the predicted profiles obtained from a finite difference solution of the coupled conservation equations. The operating limits for unidirectional flow were determined in a flow visualization experiment. The isothermal eddy diffusivity models were found to be inadequate and the results indicate that buoyancy forces act to increase the turbulent transport properties.
