Sinopsis

The local and total heat transfer coefficients of a cylinder in cross-flow have been measured in the Reynolds number range 2 × 104 < Re < 4 × 106 at four roughness conditions. The roughness parameter was varied from k/d = 0 (smooth surface) up to k/d = 900 × 10−5. In the subcritical flow range the heat transfer is not influenced by the roughness. The curves Nu versus Re collapse. At transcritical flow conditions the maximum improvement of the heat transfer caused by surface roughening is equal to the factor 2.5.
