Sinopsis

The problem of convection heat transfer from an infinite, upward-facing, heated horizontal surface that is exposed to the natural environment is analysed. The approximate analysis of natural convection considers the early development of a thermal conduction layer in a fluid adjacent to the heated surface. This layer ultimately becomes unstable resulting in the formation of thermals. Cases of constant surface temperature and constant heat fluxare evaluated. An extension of the analysis to model the influence of winds on the heat transfer coefficient is not possible.
Equations are obtained that predict the convective heat transfer coefficient and they are found to be in good agreement with experimental results for the case of no wind. Further experimental work is required to extend the equations to include windy conditions.
