Sinopsis

A numerical study of natural convection in a two dimensional open cavity for both transient and steady-state ow has been carried out. The cavity has one heated vertical wall facing a vertical opening, with top and bottom insulated. Numerical solutions are obtained for the Navier-Stokes equations on a non-staggered grid using a nite volume scheme. Results are considered for a wide range of Rayleigh numbers varying from 1×105 to 1×1010 with Prandtl number 7.0 and the inclination angles from 10° to 90°. The flow is steady at low Rayleigh number for all angles and becomes unsteady at high Rayleigh number for all angles except the angle α = 30°. Flow pattern and heat transfer results are presented and discussed.
