A thin liquid film on a horizontal solid surface is heated in a pulsewise manner from beneath using a small heater. The behavior of the transient deformation of the film surface resulting from liquid flow induced by the Marangoni effect is investigated. A significant deformation close to the breaking up of the liquid film and the prompt recovery after heating are clearly observed on and around the heater. Mist consisting of ultra-fine particles is also observed to emerge from the thinned liquid surface as the heating power is increased. The vertical displacement of the liquid film surface is measured using a laser focus displacement meter. The time dependent wave form of the displacement exhibits sequential characteristic stages. The interaction between the forces acting on the liquid surface in directions normal to and parallel to the heater length and the liquid flow from the heater to the side wall are suggested to significantly affect the deformation of the thin liquid film.
