Sinopsis

Convective boiling in confined geometries such as capillaries may under specific conditions display unsteady behavior. Depending on the operating conditions, the device's compliance and the heating parameters…, several types of instabilities may appear and develop in the two-phase flow. The aim of our study is to understand the different types of two-phase flow behavior through experiments and physical models. The geometrical configuration investigated is a rectangular channel with a hydraulic diameter of 889 µm. In this paper, we develop an experimental device and analyze the thermo-hydraulic behavior of the two-phase flow based on the two parameters: heat flux and mass flow rate. A criterion is proposed for predicting the stability flow transition in the channel. The heat transfer is found to increase with the quality of the exit vapor for steady behavior whereas it decreases when unsteady behavior occurs.
