Sinopsis

Starting with a power-series form of the solution to the differential equations, expressions are derived for the fin efficiency and the maximum limiting value of the thermal resistance of annular fins of constant thickness and tapered annular fins of constant cross-sectional area for heat flow. Results for the former are then used to develop curves for rectangular fins on round tubes using the "sector method" (4). Implicit in the sector method is the assumption of radial heat flow. The implications of this assumption are discussed, and comparisons made with efficiencies obtained by other methods. Results, covering a range of aspect ratios from one to three and widths from one to three tube diameters, are presented in a form useful for design.
