Sinopsis

A finite element based numerical method has been developed for the prediction of developing constant property laminar flow and heat transfer in the entrance region of arbitrary shaped passages. The governing equations are simplified by neglecting the axial diffusion of momentum and heat within the fluid, from which, a two-level integration scheme is developed using the finite element method. The procedure is here applied to the previously unsolved problem of combined velocity and temperature development in the entrance region of elliptical ducts. Good agreement is demonstrated between the predictions for the limiting cases of the circular duct and asymptotic (fully developed) conditions with available experimental and analytical results. The transverse velocity components which are present in developing flows are seen to have a significant effect on the predicted heat transfer. An interesting asymmetry of the development of the temperature profiles between the major and minor axes has also been revealed.
