Sinopsis

Until relatively recently it was generally believed that the full Navier-Stokes equations must be used to obtain accurate numerical solutions to flows containing regions of recirculation. In this study the Navier-Stokes equations are partially parabolized by neglecting terms representing stream-wise diffusion of momentum. The equations are solved in primitive variables by a multiple space-marching procedure using type-dependent differencing for convective terms. Steady, two-dimensional incompressible laminar flows undergoing sudden expansions are considered. Comparisons are made with experimental data and numerical solutions obtained by other investigators. Generally, the predictions of the present scheme are found to be in good agreement with the experimental measurements.
