Sinopsis

The paper describes the essential phenomena occurring during core heat-up of a PWR under extreme low probability severe accident conditions. The present status of models describing the thermal-hydraulics, heat transfer, oxidation of Zircaloy clad, and molten fuel/clad relocation is given. This includes reference to the principal codes of interest in the UK. The paper gives a demonstration of the coupled effects of the models as embodied in the SCDAP code by application to the EG&G PBF 1.1 Severe Fuel Damage experiment, in the USA.
