Sinopsis

This paper is concerned with the development and implementation of film methods of condenser design so that they can be used confidently in industrial practice. Firstly the relevant aspects of the theory of multicomponent mass transfer are described and their application to condenser design is highlighted. Then general algorithms are presented which will allow design for vapours which form both miscible and immiscible condensates. The methods proposed have been verified by an extensive experimental programme involving studies with both single tubes, and with a large scale shell and tube condenser of standard industrial geometry and design. The objective of providing a self consistent database for the validation of computer design codes, in some part of which all the individual resistances are controlling, has been achieved.
