A STUDY OF EXCURSIVE FLOW INSTABILITY IN PARALLEL CONDENSERS

Sinopsis

In a previous paper, the authors presented a simple model which yielded a criterion for onset of static instability when two condenser tubes operated in parallel. The model has now been extended to incorporate the characteristics of the common inlet manifold, leading to a modified criterion. This criterion suggests that instability is dependent on the relation between condenser pressure drop and mass flux, and on the inlet loss coefficient of the inlet manifold.
Experimental pressure drop and maldistribution data have been obtained for a wide range of operating conditions in a test apparatus designed to have nominally no dissimilarity between the flow paths. The stability criterion is used to interpret the maldistribution data and is shown to have potential for predicting the likely departure from uniform distribution between several parallel-connected condensers.
