Sinopsis

The energy in concentrated sunlight can be converted into chemical forms. One way to implement this concept is to use a receiver/tubular reactor configuration, i.e. an enclosure with refractory walls housing a catalytic reactor. Solar radiation is captured within the receiver, redistributed therein, transmitted through the tube walls into the catalytic bed and absorbed therein by driving an endothermic reaction.
A theoretical formulation that integrates the many separate but related phenomena is presented. For the radiation treatment of the problem we work in the semi-gray approximation, which gives satisfactory results in our case. For treatment of heat absorbed in the chemical reactor we use the recent results for the chemical kinetics of reactions.
Theoretical predictions of reactor performances are compared with experimental results and good agreement has been found.
