Sinopsis

An estimation procedure for the determination of the thermal properties, thermal conductivity and volumetric heat capacity, using a heat flux probe which simultaneously measures temperature and heat flux is presented. The procedure requires a mathematical model of a sample subjected to a heat flux which was solved using Green's functions, and the resulting calculated temperatures were compared with actual experimental data. An optimization procedure was then used to determine the optimal duration of the imposed heat flux which minimized the confidence errors of the estimated properties. The estimation procedure was demonstrated using simulated temperature data with added random measurement errors, and the effects of the variance of the measurement errors and the duration of the heat flux on the confidence intervals of the resulting property estimates were investigated.
