Sinopsis

Spectral methods belong to general class of weighted residual techniques which approximate continuous functions globally in terms of a Fourier or polynomial expansion. For problems with sufficiently smooth solutions, spectral methods provide exponential convergence. The objective of this review paper is to demonstrate the use of spectral methods in the numerical simulation of certain class of heat transfer problems. After a review of the literature, various results from direct simulations of a mixed convection problem and a mixing process in horizontal channels and from an investigation of the stability of a radiating fluid in vertical enclosures are presented.
