Sinopsis

Heat transfer between the solid boundaries and a highly viscous fluid in the annular region between two confocal ellipses with circumferencial gliding walls is studied. If the boundaries are displaced at constant angular velocity the heat transfer enhancement is due to the two slender recirculation regions, a Nus-selt number of about 1.8 can be attained. However, by an appropriate time periodic modulation, Nusselt numbers of over 2.2 can be reached. The additional enhancement is due here to chaotic advection. This flow has a 3-D counterpart, an axial velocity component, independent of the other 2, is superposed. Heat transfer enhancement, for developped thermal profile, depends on the same parameters plus several others such as the average velocity in the annular region.
