NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION ON THE COOLING PERFORMANCE AND CONFIGURATION OPTIMIZATION OF TRANSPIRATION COOLING WITH PHASE CHANGE
Sinopsis
Transpiration cooling with phase change has been recognized as an effective cooling technology, due to its large specific surface of heat convection between coolant and porous matrix and the huge latent heat of the coolant phase change. In this paper, the cooling performance and configuration optimization of the transpiration cooling system on a 2D wedge-shaped nose cone under supersonic condition are numerically investigated. The characteristics of fluid flow, heat transfer and phase change involved are
simulated by the local thermal non-equilibrium two phase mixture model (LTNE-TPMM) and the CFD commercial software with a self-compiled algorithm embedded. Using the theoretical model and numerical approach validated by experimental data, the transpiration cooling processes on three wedge-shaped nose cone configurations are systematically studied and compared, equal thickness walled configuration, unequal thickness walled configuration, and separated configuration with different coolant injection
pressures. The imperfect and undesired cooling performance obtained on equal thickness walled configuration, indicates the great necessity of configuration optimization of the transpiration cooling system. And the two optimal configurations, i.e., varying the wall thickness and separating the porous structure into several chambers with different coolant injection pressures, can both achieve the optimization of the transpiration cooling system while the latter is much superior in improving the cooling effectiveness and reducing the coolant wasted.
