Sinopsis

Rayleigh-Bénard convection is the most typical model of thermal convection. There are only a few researches about the influence of polymer additives in Rayleigh-Bénard convection. And how surfactant additives influence the heat transport in RBC system remains unclear. This paper presents an experimental study on the heat transport in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection with polymer solutions and surfactant solutions. A decrease of the measured Nusselt number is observed in both polymer solution case and surfactant solution case, while the Nusselt number in surfactant solution case is smaller than that in polymer case. The velocity field was obtained by particle image velocimetry. The results show that the large-scale circulation in polymer solution case is similar to that in Newtonian fluid case but it fails to form in surfactant solution case. For the Reynolds number, the curves do not change with the addition of polymer, but the Reynolds number decreased obviously in surfactant solution case. The above phenomena of surfactant solution case are caused by its shear-shinning and elastic characteristics.
