Film boiling was studied for stratified flow of Refrigerant - 113 in horizontal tubes. Because the flow conditions were not uniform around the circumference (vapor along the top and film boiling liquid along the bottom), to determine some kind of overall average heat transfer coefficient was deemed valueless.

An analysis for predicting performance is presented, the results of which compare favorably with the experimental data. The ranges of variables studied are as follows:

Tube diameter 0.402"
Length 15" and 24"
Inlet Liquid Velocity 1.23 to 2.46 ft/sec
Pressure atmospheric
Heat flux 10,000 to 19,000 Btu/hr ft2
Inlet condition near saturated liquid
Outlet condition 0 to 8% quality
