Résumé

The formation of steam bubbles at an orifice submerged in subcooled water is studied both theoretically and experimentally. In the theory, potential flow is assumed for the water, and the governing equations of motion and energy are solved numerically to predict the changing bubble parameters. The moments of the bubble necking and detachment from the orifice are of particular interest and are compared with the moment when the forces of inertia, surface tension, and buoyancy, etc. are in balance. In the experimental work, because of asymmetry of the bubble shape, photographs of the bubbles are taken from two directions at right angles to one another simultaneously and to avoid the mutual interference of the reflection of the two beams of light, polarizers are introduced into the photographic technique. The experimental data covers the range of the Jacob number from 10 to 75.
