Résumé

After a short introduction to the principles of direct and large-eddy simulation, we turn to its application to free convection. We restrict ourselves to flows between two horizontal surfaces. For the Rayleigh-Bénard problem reliable direct simulations have been reported for a Rayleigh number up to 4105. For geophysical boundary layers convective turbulence can only be simulated with a large-eddy model. The results of these simulation agree well with experiments and allow us insight into the dynamics of convection. We must conclude that the role of simulations has been firmly established as a tool to study turbulence
