Résumé

The objective of this two-part paper is to develop a solution using the boundary element method for freezing and melting problems involving multiple phase fronts separating layers of liquid and solid. In Part I, the problem formulation was presented and a general nonlinear boundary integral equation was developed for the temperature distribution in an arbitrary region in terms of the unknown boundary locations, temperatures and heat fluxes.
Here in Part II, the nonlinear boundary integral equations are discretized from which a simultaneous algebraic set of equations for the boundary unknowns is assembled. An implicit time discretization is employed in order to produce numerically stable results. Numerical results are presented for a plane layer with one surface exposed to a convective environment whose temperature alternates in time between values above and below the phase change temperature. Such a situation could occur in ice thermal storage systems. The numerical behavior of the solution method as well as the dynamic behavior of the creation and coalescence of alternating liquid and solid layers is examined.
