Résumé

Recent advances in the understanding of melting heat transfer are reviewed mainly in context of its application to latent heat-of-fusion thermal energy storage. The emphasis in the paper is on the fundamental, physical phenomena observed during melting of phase change material as well as snow layer and liquid ice bed. The important role played by buoyancy-driven fluid flow is discussed and problem areas for further research are identified.
