Résumé

This paper presents the results of a numerical study of turbulent natural convection for Ra=5×l010 in a three dimensional enclosure. The enclosure has a square cross-section and a longitudinal aspect ratio of ten. The top, bottom, and end walls were insulated while one longitudinal side wall was heated, and the other was cooled. This geometry is a tliree dimension extension of the two dimensional problem posed in the 1992 Workshop (Eurotherm Seminar n° 22) held in Delft, The Netherlands (Henkes and Hoogendoom, 1992).
It is shown that the QUICK convection model can be used with the k-ε turbulence equations. Together with upstream differencing of the k and ε source terms, we obtain symmetric calculations in all three dimensions. The three dimensional model accurately predicts the two dimensional solution at and in the near vicinity of the longitudinal midplane.
The present results at the enclosure's longitudinal midplane compare favorably with those from the 1992 Workshop contributors. Several different grids were used in the longitudinal directional to establish their effect on the entire solution. We demonstrate the three dimensional effects of the end walls by comparing temperature, velocity, and turbulent kinetic energy profiles along the length of the enclosure.
