Résumé

Critical components in coal-fired power plants such as final superheaters are susceptible to damage due to changes in operational conditions. Mathematical process models may be employed to obtain a better understanding of the relationship between the operational conditions and the metal temperatures. This paper presents a process model of a superheater heat exchanger based on a 1-D network approach, together with the model validation. The model captures the physical layout of the tube passes via the arrangement of the network of flow and heat transfer elements, while all the relevant modes of heat transfer are accounted for. Having comprehensive real plant operational data would be ideal for model validation but is rarely possible in an industrial setting. Therefore, a validation methodology is proposed that is based on a combination of plant commissioning C-schedules and a boiler mass and energy balance, as well as limited plant measurements. The methodology was applied in the validation of the proposed superheater model. The consistent comparisons with C-schedule data provide suitable evidence of the validity of the model, which was further enhanced via the comparisons with real plant data.
