Heat transfer in fluidized media has been the subject of many studies but the recent interest in Fluidized Bed Combustors (FBC) of coal and oil shale has focussed particular attention on heat transfer to horizontal and moderately inclined pipes immersed in large particle beds. Wide discrepancies in the available heat transfer coefficient data and significant uncertainty in the parametric trends militate against the rational design and optimization of FBC power plants.
The present effort details the results of an empirical investigation of large-particle bed heat transfer coefficients, emphasizing the influence of bed fluid dynamics on thermal transport at the pipe surface. Bed-side heat transfer coefficients are found to depend strongly on the fluidization flow regime and moderately on both the angle of inclination between 0° and 23° and the type of distributor.
